A quote that I found in my notes from the late-80s (that I really wish I knew or could find the source) helped refine my thinking of teaching mathematics. My charge was to help others see math this way.
“Mathematics is not a dry, practical,
got-to-concentrate-on-the-basics, indigestible chunk in the day. It is a gift-wrapped, satin-ribboned
package of excitement, fun, surprise, wonder, amazement, some-time tears and
all-time laughter that has every child's name on it.”
