Today is the birthday of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Douglas Hofstadter, who wrote Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. The book discussed the connections between the mathematician (Gödel), the artist (Escher), and the musician (Bach).
The connections to symbols as a means to communicate in each of the areas are theme throughout the book. Hofstadter claims the book isn't really about mathematics as much as it is about the workings of the the brain.
