Aldwyth

My son taught me that good art captures a viewer's sense of wonder, encouraging a need to look deeper, examine more closely, and seek its many messages and meanings.  One artist that did that so well is known by her single name, Aldwyth. Back in October 2010, I had an opportunity to spend a morning with her, along with about fifty others at a conference session hosted by the state's art association.

Her work is amazing, detailed, and unique. The piece shown, Casablanca (2003-2006), is made up of hundreds of eyes cut from various sources. The piece is nearly six feet wide and about 6 1/2 feet high, so the image really doesn't do the actual work justice. The lens serve to represent the artist's reflective spirit and title reminds us one of the classic lines, "Here's looking at you, kid."

Visitors to this blog are encouraged to read the article featured on artnet.com. Not only will you learn more about this 76-year-old artist who lives and works in a single room tree house on the coast, you'll be mesmerized by her work. One, in particular,  re-su-mé / re-sume, is indicative of her use of language and art, as well as her ability to bring the viewer into the work and its many stories.
